SPENCER HITS THE CLASSROOM TO TEACH ABOUT SAVING
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ (May 4, 2010) – In recognition of national "Teach Children to Save Day," Spencer bankers headed to various schools in Clifton, Garfield, Hasbrouck Heights and Lodi to teach elementary students about saving money. Branch Managers, Business Development Officers and Marketing taught almost 300 students a lesson on banking and the importance of saving money at an early age.
The lesson plan consisted of learning about the long-term benefits of saving, how and why to create a budget and differentiating between needs versus wants. The afternoon was full of interactive activities and the students had a great time learning about money! Each child received a certificate of participation in the "Teach Children to Save, Million Child Challenge." They also went home with Spencer goodies: calculator boxes, rulers, pencils, highlighters and a money newsletter for review, full of parent tips on how to raise a money conscious child.
"Given today’s market and everything that is going on in our global economy, we at Spencer feel it’s crucial that children learn at an early age the value of money and how to properly manage it," stated Janel Bazih, Assistant Vice President and Marketing Manager at Spencer. "We are proud to assist teachers and parents in providing these lessons to the children in our community and strongly believe it will help turn them into money savvy adults."
Teach Children to Save Day is a national campaign that raises awareness about the important role that banks and bankers play in helping young people develop lifelong saving habits. The program’s goal is to reach out to five million students before the end of 2011, which will be the 15th anniversary of the program.
