Scammers are becoming increasingly creative with thefts and scams—targeting checks or images of checks to make unauthorized purchases or withdrawals.

Although postal workers across the country do their best to keep your mail safe, the United States Postal Inspection Service recovers more than $1 Billion in fraudulent checks and money orders each year, according to the American Bankers Association.

Types of Postal Check Scams

  • Check fraud: stealing or forging checks to make unauthorized transactions
  • Check washing: stealing checks and using chemicals to “wash” the check and alter information—increasing the amount and making it payable to the scammer

Methods to Protect Your Checks

  • Use black ink on your checks
  • Ensure that all payee and amount fields are fully completed—do not leave any blank spaces
  • Refrain from sharing unnecessary personal details (social security number, phone number, credit card information, etc.)
  • Limit the number of people who have check access and sensitive information
  • Regularly review your bank activity and statements for suspicious transactions
  • Follow up with check recipients to ensure the correct person received your check

 Methods to Protect Your Mail

  • Send mail in security envelopes
  • Don’t leave mail in your mailbox overnight
  • Sign up for informed delivery at USPS.com for daily email notifications of incoming mail and packages
  • Send mail using the letter slots inside your local Post Office
  • Contact the sender if you don’t receive anticipated mail in a timely manner

It’s important to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting your financial information by following the above methods to protect yourself and/or your business. Unfortunately, sometimes you can be proactive and still fall victim to fraudulent actions. If you’re faced with check fraud, be sure to take immediate action:

  • Notify Spencer Savings Bank about the fraudulent transaction
  • Report the crime to local law enforcement
  • Report any suspected mail theft to the United States Postal Inspection Service at uspis.go/report or at 1-877-876-2455

Stay informed and stay safe!
